1.     Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text?

In the article, “For women under 30, Most births occur outside of Marriage”, women are being marginalized for having children outside of marriage. The author uses bias with diction and tone, bias through selection and omission, and bias by source control give a negative connotations to women that have children outside of wedlock. The author marginalizes women into the traditional societal views of women should not have “illegitimate” children. The author constantly uses negative connotations to change the opinion of the reader and try to administer a more conservative perspective on women and children, and traditional martial roles.

1.     How could a text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers?


The article “For women under 30, Most births occur outside of Marriage” can be read and understood differently by two different readers from two different cultures. For readers that are more conservative and traditional, they will read this article, and agree with the author. For reader that are more liberal, and progressive, they will read this article, and disagree with the perspective of the author.

The bias that the author employs such as bias with diction and tone, bias through selection and omission, and bias by source control give a negative connotations to women that have children outside of wedlock. This raises the argument of “should women have children out of wedlock?”.

  1. I like the way you ended each introduction, with a claim or question that can be argued and answered. This exhibits signs of a strong introduction as it establishes the basis surrounding your argument that will be pursued throughout the essay. To improve, the first paragraph uses a lot of repetition in the phrase "The author", so I would try to use a wider variety of vocabulary. I would also establish how the context of this essay influences themes explored in the article.

  2. Good blog post, and solid argument. You were able to articulate it well. You just need a little more detail to make this introduction as good as it can be, specifically the demographic of the readers, and the people being marginalized. Solid theses however you need to add in the "why are you writing about this?" part to it to help create relevance for the essay that you will then write using this introduction.
